The Fault In Our Stars (YA Reviews)

Sunday, December 27, 2015

Hi everyone! I made an extra effort to relax on my bed for 4 hours straight reading (and re-reading) THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green. Yes, I know I'm behind on all the latest book stuff, but when I got a SHINY new copy for Christmas, I thought to myself, MUST. READ. I'm still in the process of re-reading TFIOS for the 3rd time, but might as well make my last post of 2015 be the best! So that's why I'm ya know reviewing one of MY FAVORITE BOOKS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) So, without further ado, here is THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, BY JOHN GREEN.

Age: 12+ (This is a slightly higher level MG. So it's like MG+ I guess?)
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Penguin Books; Reprint edition (April 8, 2014)

"Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love."

(I'm just realizing this right now, but even the stinkin' summary is well written.)

So basically there are 2 main characters in this story: Hazel and Augustus. Hazel has lung cancer and always carries an oxygen tank (that has tubes connected to her nose) with her. Augustus has a prosthetic leg (I think he had cancer in his legs...?) It all starts when Hazel meets Augustus in her weekly Support Group at the church. So that's basically all the background you need.

Here are the...

Reasons You Should Read (and if you've already read, re-read) THE FAULT IN OUR STARS BY JOHN GREEN:

  • I cannot emphasize this enough: It's amazingly well written. Probably more well written than any book I've read. (And obviously I read a lot, cuz, ya know, the whole thing with Cindy READS A LOT...) The story, the plot, the language, it all makes sense because of the way he puts the story together. It's in the perfect order. His words have an extremely deep meaning. There's about a gajillion plot twists. It just all makes sense! You're fine in the beginning, but heartbroken in the end. You get hooked from the FIRST PAGE and it's like nothing else in the world matters except. This. Stinkin'. Book.
  • It's a tragedy. Okay, so the first time I read it...well...I WAS EXTREMELY ANGRY. (I was literally having a temper tantrum. "WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME, JOHN GREEN?! I NEVER DID ANYTHING TO YOU! IT WAS GOING TO WELL AND THEN YOU JUST...YOU JUST RUINED IT! WAAAHH!!!!) And having a story be a tragedy is not normally a good thing, but in this case, I think it IS a good thing because I mean, it brings awareness to cancer. It shows what ACTUAL people have to go through, even if its fiction. It makes you look at your life and see the value that is in it. It makes you appreciate what you have and look at EVERYTHING differently. It's like suddenly someone's turned on the lights and you see the truth in life.
  • It's full of metaphors and quotes that help you get through the difficulties of living in this world. (Don't worry, I've included a couple quotes in this review!) Seriously, quotes are EVERYWHERE. They're basically on every page! I feel like the reason this book has a lot of quotes is because well, everyone's a hero in this book. There's always something needing to be solved, some problem that needs to be fixed.
  • It's concept. It's about a teenage couple. No biggie. BUT, it's about a teenage couple where they both of the people in the relationship have cancer. That puts the twist on the story. Even though it is difficult for them to live with the cancer, being with each other helps. A lot. To see the blooming relationship between Hazel and Augustus makes me feel all happy inside. But before you get too happy, trust me on this, I was near tears by the end of this book.

This is the moment you've been waiting for...The moment all of the things I've promised will be revealed...I give you...THE FAULT IN OUR STARS QUOTES!

Okay? Okay.
It's a metaphor, see: you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do it's killing.

Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.

You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have some say in who hurts you.

The world is not a wish granting factory.

My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.

So I think you get it when I say that this book is seriously one of the most powerful things I have read in my 12 years of living? It's not only really inspiring, but it also leads you to think of the 3 questions of life:

1. Will I be loved?

2. Will I be remembered?

3. Will I leave a mark on this world?

It really shocked me to know that this book is entirely fictional. John Green has made an alternate universe where everything is exactly the same but not. This leads to my rating of this book:

(Since I couldn't find a picture for this occasion, it will only be in text)

3, 457, 269, 482,104 stars out of 5 stars.

I'm not even like, joking. If you haven't picked up this book and read it, stop reading this right now and get yourself a copy. I don't care if it's from your bookstore or your library, or even from Amazon, BUT STOP READING THIS RIGHT NOW AND GO GET YOURSELF A COPY! GO! I KNOW YOU'RE STILL HERE, GOOOO NOOOOOWWWW!!!!

So, if you've already read this book and have gotten past the...thingy, I WISH YOU A LATE MERRY CHRISTMAS AND AN EARLY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Gosh, it's going to be 2016! Thank you so much for joining me on this MMGM and GO READ SOME MORE JOHN GREEN!
